SIU Concludes Investigation into Man Shot by Police; Man Wounded and Toronto Officer Deceased

Case Number: 26-TFI-276

Mississauga, ON (9 October, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Toronto Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a 19-year-old man seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire with police in North York. The man shot and killed a Toronto Police Service officer.

On the morning of June 11, 2026, Emergency Task Force officers conducted a dynamic entry into an apartment in the area of Black Creek Drive and Trethewey Drive to execute a warrant as part of a firearms investigation. The man shot his pistol at officers, striking one officer, and they returned fire. The man was hospitalized with serious injuries and the officer died in hospital.

Director Martino found the man’s use of a gun against the officers left them with no alternative but to try to defend themselves with a resort to lethal force of their own.  “There can be no doubt that the officers believed their lives to be in danger and that they acted to protect themselves from grievous bodily harm and death.”
