SIU Investigating Man’s Fatal Fall from Mississauga Condo

Mississauga, ON (8 October, 2026) ---
The Deputy Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Stacey O’Brien, has terminated an investigation into the death of a 34-year-old man in Mississauga. As Peel Regional Police were at the scene at the time of the man’s death, the SIU was notified and initiated an investigation.

On July 29, 2026, officers were dispatched to a condo in the area of Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue West, following a call to police from a woman indicating her boyfriend had assaulted her. In an attempt to arrest the man and check on his wellbeing, officers knocked on the door and identified themselves as police officers. There was no response. Officers obtained the key and entered the unit, seeing no one in plain view. Officers called out the man’s name and announced their presence. After they opened a closed door within the unit, an officer saw the man on the balcony. He had positioned a chair near the balcony railing and was seen climbing onto it. As the officer crossed the room towards the sliding glass door, he called out to the man to stop him. As the officer opened the sliding glass door to the balcony, the man stepped onto the railing and jumped from the balcony. Due to the rapid progression of events, there was no reasonable opportunity to intervene or prevent the outcome. On this record, it was evident that the police officers did nothing that could conceivably attract criminal liability in connection with the unfortunate death of the man.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
