SIU Investigating Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Mississauga Involving Toronto Police Service

Mississauga, ON (6 August, 2026) ---
The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is providing the following update regarding its investigation into an overnight police-involved shooting in Mississauga that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man.

Since issuing its earlier news release, the SIU has received updated information indicating that the Mercedes involved in the incident had not been reported stolen. Rather, Toronto Police Service officers had been tracking the vehicle in connection with a firearms investigation.

As previously reported, during the incident multiple unmarked police vehicles became involved in a collision with the Mercedes, which was occupied by four people. One officer discharged his firearm into the vehicle, striking the driver. The 19-year-old driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The three remaining occupants were taken into custody, and one police officer was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for August 7, 2026.

Four investigators, three forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
