SIU Investigating After Man Hospitalized Following Taser by Toronto Police

Special Investigations Unit investigators are seeking witnesses to come forward after a 36-year-old man was hospitalized following the use of conducted energy weapons during his arrest by Toronto Police Service officers on Tuesday in North York.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, officers responded to the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Patrick Boulevard for a report of an assault.
  • During the man’s arrest, several conducted energy weapons were discharged at the man. The man was admitted to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.
  • It’s believed there were bystanders in the area who may have captured cellphone video.
Three investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
