SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Weekend Collision in Hamilton

Mississauga, ON (15 June, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Hamilton Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the fractured hip suffered by a 15-year-old boy in a collision. On February 28, 2026, an officer attempted to stop two vehicles for street racing on Centennial Parkway North. The drivers of the cars – a Volkswagen and Kia fled. A male passenger in the Kia was seriously injured when the driver crashed into a transport truck and a Hyundai that were stopped at a red light.

In the short pursuit that unfolded, Director Martino was satisfied the officer comported himself with due care and regard for public safety. He noted the officer was well back of the fleeing cars leaving no suggestion that his driving prevented the driver of either vehicle from slowing down had they been so inclined.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
