SIU Investigating Death of Man on Aroland First Nation

Mississauga, ON (8 June, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 50-year-old man on Aroland First Nation.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5:15 p.m. on June 4, 2026, a woman contacted emergency services to report that her partner was suffering from a suspected drug overdose. At the same time, the woman flagged down a police vehicle that was passing by.
  • The officer checked on the man, and noticed he was conscious. Soon after though, the man lost consciousness. The officer administered Naloxone to the man. When the man went vital signs absent, the officer initiated CPR.
  • Upon their arrival, EMS took over resuscitation efforts. At 5:54 p.m., the man was pronounced deceased.

Two investigators and one forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow in Toronto.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
