SIU Investigating Death of Man in Guelph

Mississauga, ON (7 June, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the falling death of a 58-year-old man this morning in Guelph.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 9 a.m. on June 7, 2026, the Guelph Police Service received multiple calls in relation to an individual’s behaviour at an apartment building located in the area of London Street West and Bagot Street.
  • Officers attended the apartment unit in question and they breached the door.
  • Upon entering the unit, an interaction ensued between officers and the man.
  • The man retreated from the police, and a short time later fell to the ground below.
  • He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
