SIU Investigating Woman’s Fatal Fall from Ottawa Balcony

Mississauga, ON (20 May, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 37-year-old woman this afternoon in Ottawa.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 4 p.m. on May 20, 2026, Ottawa Police Service received a 911 call to report a woman who was hanging off the balcony of an apartment building in the area of Heatherington Road and Albion Road North.
  • Officers attempted to talk to the woman. A short time later, the woman fell. EMS took the woman to hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case at this time. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow (May 21, 2026).

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
