SIU Terminates Investigation into Man’s Hospitalization in Toronto

Case Number: 26-TCI-019

Mississauga, ON (12 May, 2026) ---
The Deputy Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Stacey O’Brien, has terminated an investigation into the reported hospitalization of a 26-year-old man following his arrest by Toronto Police Service officers. On January 12, 2026, the man was arrested following a 911 call reporting that the man, while intoxicated, assaulted a woman before retreating into a bedroom with their infant son.

It was further reported that the man was subject to conditions prohibiting him from being at the residence. When police arrived, they learned the man was in possession of a knife. The man surrendered the baby to police, followed by himself. The man told police he ingested cleaning solution, so he was taken to hospital and reportedly admitted in critical condition. The man declined to provide an interview and did not consent to the release of his medical records. The man has since been deported. In the absence of a statement, and no evidence of serious injury being identified within the mandate of the SIU, the unit was without jurisdiction to investigate the incident. The file has been closed. Every consideration will be given to re-opening the file in the event the man decides to come forward in the future.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
