SIU Investigating Death of Man in Barrie

Mississauga, ON (6 March, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 29-year-old man today in Barrie.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 3:30 a.m. on March 6, 2026, Barrie Police Service officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Dunlop Street West and Frances Street. During the stop, officers learned that a male passenger was wanted on an arrest warrant.
  • The man fled the vehicle, and officers pursued him on foot.
  • In the backyard of a residence on Frances Street, there was an interaction between the man and officers, which included the deployment of a conducted energy weapon.
  • The man went vital signs absent. First aid was administered, and he was transported to hospital.
  • The man was pronounced deceased in hospital.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
