SIU Updates Collision Investigation in London

TORONTO (5 December, 2005) --- The name of the driver of the Honda Civic seriously injured as the result of the vehicular collision that occurred with a Buick vehicle at the intersection of Clarke Road and Dundas Street on December 23, 2005 is Robert St. Denis. Mr. St. Denis remains in critical condition at the London Health Sciences Centre - Victoria Campus.

The Special Investigations Unit's investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. The London Police Service officer that had attempted to stop the Buick prior to the collision has been interviewed, as have five civilians in and around the scene at the time of the collision. A completed collision reconstruction of the incident is pending.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
