SIU Investigating Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Brantford

Mississauga, ON (16 January, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 33-year-old man was fatally shot by Brantford Police this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 2:30 a.m., police were called about a disturbance involving a man and woman at a home on Palomino Drive.
  • Emergency Response Team officers arrived and negotiated with the male. 
  • After a time, police entered the residence and three officers discharged their firearms.
  • The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
  • The woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • A sharp-edged weapon was recovered at the scene.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Sunday.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
