Update: SIU Releases Name of Man Fatally Shot in Toronto

Case Number: 12-TFD-041   

Mississauga (6 February, 2012) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of 29-year-old Michael Eligon Friday morning.

The SIU was notified that:
• At approximately 10:15 a.m. on February 3, 2012, there was an interaction between Toronto Police Service officers and Mr. Eligon on Milverton Boulevard. 
• At some point, Mr. Eligon was fatally shot. 
• He was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 10:37 a.m.

Seven investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU are investigating this incident.  One subject officer and ten witness officers with the TPS have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
