SIU Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Hamilton

Mississauga, ON (17 March, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit continues to investigating a police-involved shooting in Hamilton that left a 30-year-old man with serious injuries. The man remains in hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

The preliminary information indicates that shortly before 4 p.m. on March 16, 2025, Hamilton Police Service officers responded to an apartment building in the area of Hunter Street East and Spring Street for an assault call. Upon entering an apartment unit, the officers located a man armed with an edged weapon. At some point, one officer discharged his firearm and the man was struck. He was taken to hospital.
 
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. 

At this time, one subject official and four witness officials have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
