SIU Investigating After Toronto Police Officer Fired Gun in North York

Mississauga, ON (16 December, 2023) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a Toronto Police Service officer fired their gun during an attempt to arrest three men fleeing in an SUV last night in North York.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 6 p.m. last night, police were contacted following an armed robbery at a retailer on Sheppard Avenue East. Officers located the men believed responsible; they were travelling in an SUV in the area of Plunkett Road and Millwick Drive. Officers attempted to box in the vehicle. There was an interaction and an officer shot his firearm. 
  • The SUV was involved in a collision.
  • No one is believed to be injured.
  • Officers arrested the three men.
Four investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. One subject official has been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
