SIU Investigating Serious Injury of Man Accused of Homicide, Shooting Officers in London

Mississauga, ON (14 March, 2023) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 42-year-old man suffered a serious injury in the course of his arrest by London Police Service officers on Saturday. The SIU launched an investigation after being notified of the injury yesterday (March 13, 2023).

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5:15 a.m. on March 11, 2023, officers were called to attend 621 Kipps Lane after a deceased individual was found in the building. 
  • A man barricaded himself in a unit of the building and officers attempted to negotiate with the man. Officers entered the unit and the man shot at police, injuring two officers.
  • Officers arrested the man and he was taken to a cell. On Sunday, the man was taken to hospital after which he was diagnosed with a serious injury. He has been released from hospital.
Three investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
