SIU Concludes Investigation into Toronto Firearm Injury

Mississauga (4 December, 2010) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to probe the circumstances surrounding the firearm injury of a 24-year-old man in Toronto early yesterday evening.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU early yesterday evening and reported the following:

  • The TPS was called to a home on Laurel Avenue yesterday afternoon at 4 p.m.
  • While on scene TPS officers interacted with a man.
  • At least one shot was fired by a TPS officer.
  • The man was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery.
  • He is presently recovering in hospital.

The SIU investigation is ongoing. Six investigators and two forensic investigators from the unit are currently assigned to the investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
