SIU Continues Investigation into Firearm Injuries in Toronto

Mississauga (14 December, 2010) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the firearm injuries sustained by two men in Toronto’s west end on Friday December 10, 2010. 

The SIU designated and interviewed six witness officers (three from York Regional Police and three from the Toronto Police Service). In addition two officers have been designated as subject officers.  SIU investigators are continuing to canvass Weston Road in an effort to identify civilian witnesses and obtain any other evidence relevant to the investigation, such as CCTV footage.

The passenger, a 40-year-old Brampton man remains in Sunnybrook Hospital in critical, stable condition.  The driver, a 33-year-old Brampton man has been treated and released.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
