Update: SIU Releases Name of Man in Sudbury Firearm Death

Mississauga (30 December, 2010) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of 46-year-old Marcel Tranchemontagne of Sudbury.  Mr. Tranchemontagne was fatally shot early yesterday morning during an interaction with officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS). The GSPS reported the following information to the SIU:
  • On Wednesday, December 29, 2010, officers responded to a call to an address on Pine Street in regards to a homicide investigation.
  • At approximately 1:10 am the responding officers were involved in an interaction with Mr. Tranchemontagne.
  • During the interaction, Mr. Tranchemontagne sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to Sudbury Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
  • GSPS is continuing its investigation into the death of a second male at the residence.

A postmortem for Mr. Tranchemontagne was scheduled for December 30, 2010 at 9:00 a.m.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
