SIU Investigating Collision in Vaughan

Case Number: 11-OCD-002   

Mississauga (7 January, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of woman this evening in Vaughan. The York Regional Police (YRP) contacted the SIU at 7:48 p.m. today and reported the following:
  • On Friday January 7, 2011 a YRP officer attempted to stop a car in the area of Bathurst Street near Centre Street.
  • The car did not stop.
  • The car left the road and struck a pole.
  • The sole occupant of the car, the female driver, was ejected.
  • She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The SIU has assigned six investigators, two forensic investigators and an accident reconstructionist to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
