SIU Investigating Man’s Death in London
No Charges Against London Police Officer in Man’s Death

Mississauga, ON (4 February, 2021) ---
In accordance with the Special Investigations Unit’s name release policy which requires consent from next of kin, the Unit is now able to identify 34-year-old Fabian Hart of London as the man who passed away on February 2, 2021, in London. Mr. Hart had been lodged in a cell after being arrested by officers. When he went into medical distress, officers performed first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Mr. Hart was then transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

At this time, one subject officer, four witness officers and two service employee witnesses have been designated.

The post-mortem took place yesterday morning in London.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
