SIU Investigating After Man Fatally Shot by Police at Residence in Temiskaming Shores

Mississauga, ON (10 April, 2020) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal police-involved shooting last night of a 43-year-old man in Temiskaming Shores.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 9 p.m. on April 9, 2020, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a residence in the area of Lakeshore Road North and Wedgewood Avenue after receiving a call about an unwanted party at the residence who would not leave.
  • Soon after officers entered the residence, they located the person of interest, a 43-year-old man.  
  • There was an interaction between the man and the officers. 
  • Two officers discharged their firearms, and the man was struck multiple times.
  • He was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

At this time, three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Two subject officers and four witness officers have been designated. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow morning in Toronto.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
