SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Interaction in Tillsonburg

Mississauga, ON (10 November, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred at the end of October between police and a 32-year-old man in Tillsonburg. 

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2016, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a business at the intersection of Broadway Street and Brock Street East to deal with a man.
  • Outside of the establishment, there was an interaction between police and the man. He was arrested.
  • While at the Tillsonburg OPP detachment, the man complained of pain. As a result, he was taken to Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital for treatment.
    
Two investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
