SIU Investigating After Pedestrian Struck By Police Cruiser in Hamilton

Mississauga, ON (12 September, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained today by a 74-year-old woman who was struck by a police cruiser.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016, the 74-year-old woman was at the intersection of King Street and Dundurn Street. She proceeded to cross Dundurn Street. 
  • Meanwhile, a cruiser being driven by a Hamilton Police Service officer was traveling west on King Street. When the officer attempted to turn south onto Dundurn Street, the woman was struck.
  • She was taken to hospital for treatment of a leg injury.
    
Three investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
