SIU Investigating Shooting following Knife Attack on Dundas Street in Toronto

Toronto, ON (8 August, 2016) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is examining the circumstances surrounding a knife attack and police shooting that occurred on Dundas Street in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Sometime after 5:30 this morning, Toronto Police received a call about a man who had been stabbed by another man.  This incident occurred on Yonge Street north of Dundas Street.
  • Around 6:00 a.m., officers arrived and confronted a 39-year-old man on Dundas Street between Yonge and Bay Streets. 
  • Several shots were fired and the man was struck a number of times.
  • The man was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital.  He has undergone surgery and remains in hospital in non-life-threatening condition.       
  • The 66-year-old man was treated for a knife wound and released from hospital.    
    
Seven investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
