SIU Investigating Fatal House Fire in Windsor

Mississauga, ON (21 June, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has started an investigation into a fatal house fire in Windsor.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Around 4:00 a.m. this morning, emergency services were called about a fire at 1022 Ford Boulevard.
  • When Windsor Police officers arrived at the scene, the house was on fire.
  • There was a brief interaction with a man who was inside the house.
  • Windsor Fire & Rescue Services extinguished the fire, and a 47-year-old man was discovered inside the house.
  • The man was pronounced dead a short time later at hospital.
  • Three police officers were also transported to hospital.  They were treated for smoke inhalation and released.

The SIU has designated one subject officer and two witness officers as part of this investigation.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
