SIU Investigating Three Car Collision that Occurred Following a TAVIS Traffic Stop

Mississauga, ON (9 June, 2016) ---
An early evening traffic stop in Toronto that ended in a three-car collision is now the subject of an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on June 8, several Toronto Police officers assigned to TAVIS attempted to stop a vehicle.
  • The vehicle fled the scene of the stop. 
  • Not long after that, there was a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Albion Road and Elmhurst Drive.
  • The 32-year-old driver who fled from police was arrested.  He did not suffer serious injuries.
  • A 42-year-old woman in one of the vehicles involved in the collision suffered a serious leg injury.  She was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.          
    
Five investigators, two forensic investigators, and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
