SIU Investigating after a University Student was Struck by a London Police Cruiser

Mississauga, ON (5 April, 2016) ---
An incident in which a London Police cruiser struck and injured a 20-year-old university student is now the subject of an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after midnight on April 4, 2016, three persons were travelling southbound on Richmond Street in a Yellow London Taxi. 
  • The taxi stopped in the southbound lanes south of Piccadilly Street and opposite Molly Bloom's restaurant.
  • Three young persons exited the taxi and crossed the road towards the restaurant.
  • At the same time, a London Police cruiser was travelling northbound on Richmond Street. It struck one of the persons, a 20-year-old female university student. 
  • She was later treated at hospital for a fractured shoulder.    
    
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
