Update: Further Information on Occupants of Vehicles in Pursuit and Collision in Toronto

Toronto, ON (20 March, 2016) ---
The Special Investigations Unit has confirmed the following information regarding the occupants of the two vehicles involved in the early morning police pursuit and collision in downtown Toronto:

Occupants in the Acura (the vehicle fleeing police):
  • Two 16-year-old males (one was the driver)
  • Two 17-year-old females
  • One 15-year-old male

Occupants in the Malibu (operating as an Uber vehicle):
  • One 39-year-old male (driver)
  • One 38-year-old male
  • One 32-year-old female
  • One 27-year-old female

Injuries among the various occupants include multiple fractured bones. 

The SIU is continuing to urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
