SIU Investigating Collision in Brantford - Appealing For Witnesses

Mississauga (10 November, 2015) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a collision at Colborne and Dalhousie Streets in Brantford early this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly before 1:00 a.m., near George and Dalhousie Streets, Brantford Police pulled over a Ford F150 truck with four occupants.
  • An officer was inspecting the truck when the truck sped away eastbound on Dalhousie Street. 
  • A short time later, the truck collided with a van in the area of Dalhousie and Colborne Streets.
  • A 35-year-old woman in the van was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis.  She has been released from hospital.
  • A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident.   
 
The SIU has designated one subject officer and three witness officers.

Three investigators, two forensic investigators and one traffic reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
