SIU Concludes Investigation into Death in Bluewater

Mississauga (2 November, 2015) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a death that occurred Sunday, November 1st in the Town of Bluewater.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported the following information to the SIU:
  • Just before 6:00 p.m. on November 1, 2015, OPP officers responded to a call for a distraught female in the waters of Lake Huron at the foot of Pavilion Road.  
  • The Coast Guard was summoned and located the 32-year-old female several hundred feet from shore.  
  • She was retrieved from the water and taken to Clinton Hospital, where she was declared deceased.
  • The Coroner’s Office has been notified.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
