SIU Investigating Vehicle Injuries in Hamilton

Mississauga (27 October, 2014) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the vehicle injuries sustained by a 26-year-old man, in Hamilton. 

Preliminary information indicates the following:
  • At approximately 1:00 a.m., on Sunday, October 26, 2014 a Chevy pick-up truck and a Hamilton Police Service (HPS) cruiser collided at the intersection of Wellington Street and Cannon Street. 
  • The driver of the pick-up truck left the scene of the collision. 
  • HPS officers attempted to stop the pick-up truck. 
  • At the intersection of Wentworth Street and Wilson Street, the pick-up truck was involved in a collision with a Hamilton taxi-cab. 
  • The man, who was a passenger in the taxi-cab, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
