SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Interaction with Police in Niagara Falls

Mississauga (23 May, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred between a Niagara Regional Police Service officer and a man in Niagara Falls on Saturday, May 19, 2012.
On this date, at approximately 1:15 a.m., officers attended the Kool Katts Caribbean Restaurant at 6383 Drummond Road and arrested a 31-year-old man. The man was taken to a police detachment, lodged in a cell and released in the morning. Later in the day, he went to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken nose, fractured orbital bone and fractured cheekbone.
Two SIU investigators and one forensic investigator are probing the circumstances of the incident. Investigators are interested in speaking with any member of the public who may have witnessed the arrest. The lead investigator can be contacted at 1-800-787-8529 extension 9029.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
