SIU Investigates Custody Injury in Kitchener

Mississauga (17 December, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by a 31-year-old man in Kitchener earlier this date.

On December 17th, 2011 at 03:05 a.m., the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following:

• At approximately 12:09 a.m. on December 17, the police service received a driving complaint from a citizen.
• At 12:45 a.m. an officer located the reported vehicle at the intersection of Victoria Street and King Street West in Kitchener. The vehicle had apparently collided with a concrete light pole.
• The driver was arrested and was being transported to the police station when he went into medical distress. He was transported to hospital and admitted.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
