Case Number: 08-OCI-192

TORONTO (26 September, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an incident involving officers of the Barrie Police Service in which a local man was injured.

Officers were called to the Leticia Heights area of the city, near Barrett Crescent and McVeigh Drive, just after midnight on Sunday September 14, 2008, in response to a call concerning an alleged domestic assault occurring in the street. A man was taken into custody in connection with this incident.

The Barrie Police Service has charged 47-year-old Michael Ronald Thompson of Midhurst with assault and breach of probation.

The SIU is appealing for anyone, who either witnessed this incident or may have any information about it, to contact the Unit at 1-800-787-8529, extension 2314.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
