SIU Investigating Death of Man in Hamilton

Mississauga, ON (12 July, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 49-year-old man yesterday in Hamilton.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 10:45 p.m. on July 8, 2024, Hamilton Police Service officers attended a home in Dundas to assist paramedics with a medical call. 
  • Upon arrival, officers found the man incoherent and unresponsive. Officers were able to restrain the man, allowing the paramedics to treat him.
  • The man went vital signs absent and he was transported to hospital.
  • On July 11, 2024, the man was pronounced deceased while in hospital.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is today.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
