SIU Investigates custody injury in Barrie

Mississauga (24 November, 2006) --- At 2141 hrs Barrie Police Service reported a custody injury of a 32 year-old Barrie man to the SIU. At approximately 1800 hrs Barrie Police Service received a 911 call from a Srigley Street residence. The caller reported an unwanted guest. At 1813 hrs a second call was received from the residence reporting that the unwanted quest was damaging property. Members of the Barrie Police Service arrived and engaged a 32 year-old man. The man refused the direction of the police officers and a less than lethal use of force option was deployed. The man was taken into custody and transported to Royal Victoria Hospital where he is under going treated for a broken arm.

Two SIU investigators have been dispatched to Barrie to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
