SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Injuries in Scarborough

Mississauga (23 August, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision this afternoon that resulted in serious injuries to both a police officer and a 57-year-old civilian.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following:
• Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012, a TPS officer was traveling southbound on Midland Avenue to respond to a call;
• Near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East, there was a collision between the male officer’s vehicle and a vehicle being driven northbound by a woman;
• The officer and the woman were taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.  The officer sustained a fractured and dislocated pelvis, and the woman sustained a fractured right ankle.

The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
