SIU Concludes Hamilton Vehicle Injury Investigation

Mississauga (2 April, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision that injured a 56 year old woman in Hamilton Sunday night.

On Monday, April 2nd, 2012, the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following;

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1st, 2012, a Hamilton police officer was diverting traffic off of the eastbound Lincoln M. Alexander  Parkway at the Garth Street interchange.
An eastbound vehicle collided with a police cruiser at this location.
The female occupant of the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Hamilton General Hospital.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

 The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
