Appeal for Witnesses:SIU Continuing Investigation into Brantford Custody Injury

Mississauga (11 January, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by a 34-year-old man in Brantford last week.

The Brantford Police Service (BPS) contacted the SIU and reported the following:
• At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012, BPS officers pulled a vehicle over;
• A man fled from the vehicle and was pursued by officers;
• A short time later, the 34-year-old man was apprehended by two plainclothes male officers near the intersection of Icomm Drive/Greenwich Street and Clarence Street South, and there was a physical altercation;
• The man was taken to Brantford General Hospital for treatment of a facial injury. 

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances of this incident.  Two subject officers and three witness officers with BPS have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
