UPDATE: SIU Investigating Firearm Death in Thornhill

Mississauga (3 August, 2011) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the firearm death of a man in Thornhill late Monday evening.

The SIU investigation has determined that on August 1st York Regional Police (YRP) at approximately 11:00 p.m. officers responded to a call on Cottonwood Court. Upon arrival officers interacted with 49-year-old Kaveh Sabouri Tabatabaei. During this interaction two officers discharged their firearms. Mr. Tabatabaei sustained a fatal gunshot injury.

The SIU has designated six officers as witness officers. Two officers have been designated as subject officers. SIU investigators canvassed the area and identified a number of civilian witnesses. They will be interviewed.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
