SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Hamilton

TORONTO (6 April, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances of a fatal police shooting that occurred involving the Hamilton Police Service (HPS). The shooting occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m. this morning at 225 Parkdale Avenue North in Hamilton.

The SIU was notified that the Hamilton Police received an emergency call for assistance from the owner of M & J Billiards and Video. The owner called to report that a man had entered his store and struck him with an axe. Two officers responded and found the man outside the front of the store. A confrontation ensued between the three of them and the officers fired their guns. The man was struck and taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There is no further information available at this time. An update will be provided later today.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
