Fatal Collision in Brantford the Subject of an SIU Investigation

Brantford, ON (7 November, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the events surrounding a collision in Brantford that killed a 94-year-old woman.

Preliminary information indicates the following:
  • Brantford Police Service officers were searching for a 29-year-old man in relation to an assault with a weapon.
  • Just after 10:30 this morning, officers attempted to stop a vehicle.
  • The vehicle fled.  It collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Colborne Street and Gilkison Street.
  • One of the persons inside the vehicle that fled was treated for minor injuries.   A second person in that vehicle was uninjured.
  • The driver of the vehicle that was struck was uninjured.   A passenger suffered serious injuries, including several broken bones.  The other passenger in that vehicle – a 94-year-old woman – was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead. 
    
Five investigators, three forensic investigators, and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
