SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Markham

TORONTO (13 April, 2006) --- A team of nine investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Markham today to probe the circumstances of a fatal police shooting involving the York Regional Police (YRP).

The SIU was notified that at about 5:15 a.m. this morning, eight YRP officers responded to a home invasion call at 39 Steele Valley Road in Markham. Shortly after the officers arrived, the officers were involved in a confrontation with two men who were inside a truck. Shots were fired by police and one man was fatally wounded.

The second man fled on foot and was apprehended a short time later by police. He was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. He has been released into police custody

A post mortem examination for the deceased man is scheduled for tomorrow. His identity is not being released at this time.

SIU investigators are continuing to process the scene to gather and analyze evidentiary items related to the police shooting. Investigators have designated four subject and six witness officers from YRP. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
