SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Incident on Danforth Avenue

TORONTO (17 August, 2006) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating an incident in which a 29-year-old man was arrested by Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers and suffered a serious injury.

On the night of Saturday, August 12, 2006, the man was at the "Taste of the Danforth" festival. He became involved in an altercation with plain-clothes officers sometime after midnight and at approximately 1:00 a.m. he was arrested in the intersection of Danforth and Logan Avenues. It was during the arrest that the man suffered a head injury.

SIU investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this man's interaction with the police in the early morning hours of August 13th to contact the Unit at 416-622-1898 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 1898 or through the "Contact Us" page of the website at www.siu.on.ca.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
