TORONTO (14 September, 2006) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances of an incident that occurred involving officers with the London Police Service (LPS).

On September 12, 2006, at about 6:20 a.m., the LPS received a call about a man who was seen acting strangely in a store at 769 Southdale Road in London. The man was reportedly armed with two knives and a stick. A number of officers responded to the call and three of them were involved in an altercation with the man. The man was arrested. Immediately afterwards, he was taken to Victoria Hospital because he was hyperventilating and showing signs of medical distress.

The 34-year-old man remains in hospital in critical condition.

SIU investigators are investigating the nature and extent of police involvement in relation to this man's injury. As part of the probe, three subject and two witness officers from the LPS have been designated. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2150 or 1-800-787-8529 ext 2150.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
