SIU Investigates Collision in London

TORONTO (23 December, 2005) --- Eight investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating the circumstances surrounding a two vehicle collision that occurred on December 23, 2005 in London.

The London Police Service (LPS) notified the SIU that at 2:25 a.m., an LPS officer was attempting to stop a Buick that was traveling northbound on Highbury Road at a high rate of speed. The Buick continued southbound on Clarke Road where it collided with a Honda Civic that was traveling westbound on Dundas Street.

The driver of the Honda Civic, a 47-year-old man, was taken to London Health Sciences Centre - Victoria Campus, with severe head injuries and a broken arm. The 25-year-old male driver of the Buick suffered no serious injuries.

The SIU is probing the nature and extent of police involvement in the events leading up to the collision. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the unit at 416-622-1898 or 1-800 -787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
