SIU Concludes Investigation into Simcoe Sexual Assault Allegation

Mississauga (1 May, 2012) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred between an Ontario Provincial Police officer and a man in Simcoe on Sunday, April 29, 2012.

On this date, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a 22-year-old man was pulled over while riding his bicycle.  This took place on Queen Street, south of Evergreen Hill Road and north of Millcroft Drive.  There was an interaction between the man and the officer.

SIU investigators are interested in speaking with any member of the public, especially those residing in the neighbourhood, who may have witnessed the incident.  The lead investigator can be contacted at 416-622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2038.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
